Argumentative Essay: KONY 2012

Who is he, Joseph Kony? Before you read this essay, I bet you need to see this video first.

Think that you are in this situation. When you are sleeping, suddenly someone snact you, put you in to the jeep and give you a gun on your hands and make you shoot your parents. Joseph Kony is the head of Lord's Resistance Army, LRA. He kidnap children in Uganda and make them become the children soldiers. He led children to kill their own parents. Kony had 3 millions of children fight for him and attack others. Because of this, children in Uganda are having hard times because they are not sure if they will be kidnapped by Kony, or not. The group, Invisible Children is trying to stop Joseph Kony and they offer to donate money to Africans. The way that we could help them is to buy KONY 2012 kit. Then, is it helpful to make Kony famous and ask for help to others? In my opinion, Invisible Children could stop making Joseph Kony famous and make others pay for help to Uganda children. First, this KONY 2012 could be made for USA's benefit, such as Uganda's oil. Also, Uganda isn't one of the dangerous countries in Africa but it is one of the safe countries.

First, isn't strange that only 30~32% of money goes to the Uganda children? Money sent to Invisible children is collected for helping the Uganda children, but only some part of money is going straight to them. Then, when is the donated money used for? 30 percent of the money is actually donated to the Africans, to help the Africans. Then, what happen to the rest 70 percent of money? Those money is for the Invisible Children, the group who made the project campaign KONY 2012. By this money, they used to make some fun videos such as musical videos in YouTube to advertise about this issue. Still, the donated money is sent to Invisible Children, because some thinks that Kony is still alive and still kidnapping the children, while some think that he is dead.

On the other hand, it could be also analyzed that USA is helping the Uganda and having the oil of Uganda. Oil is the most significant resources that people need for their life. Korea suffers with it and import almost 100% of it because we do not have any oil in Korea. When USA had enough oil, they could use for their life and also become rich by selling it so they could prosper more. Some think that USA is helping Uganda because they need their oil.

Second, Uganda is now safe enough. As I told you in the first reason, some think that Joseph Kony is dead. He is not kidnapping children now maybe. According to the site of Global Issues, Uganda isn't the one of the dangerous countries in Africa. They actually don't need any help from other countries. Instead, some of them are living convenient life. The high class of the Uganda is even well-educated. Last month, a teacher from Uganda came to our school and told us about the system of Uganda, and it was similar with Korean education system. However, most of the people are thinking that all of the countries of Africa are always poor. Uganda is exceptional, and people, including Invisible children do not have to help them.

Helping others is good situation to see. Both sides, helping people and people who are getting help could have beneficial effect. We could see KONY 2012 with positive sight, but also this could be created by negative parts. USA and also Invisible Children could help them because they also want their own benefit. Also, even though it is not dangerous, Uganda couldn't always rely on other countries and they need to find their way to overcome their own problems.

  2. Hi. This is your writing TA Sohyeon. It seems like you have a good understanding of the issue at hand. I see a lot of facts that you used which I didn't find in the other students' essays, which tells me you put a lot of effort into this. You say that 70 % of the money goes to fund making 'musical videos', which was new, and also that Uganda is not designated as dangerous by 'Global issues' which was another new point.

Great job :) I look forward to reading more of your work!
